Creating Windows 11 installation media

The Windows 11 media creation tool is available on the Microsoft website. You should not download this tool from anywhere else. To use the tool, you should already have a licence to install Windows 11. This can be a licence that has been purchased through official channels or if you want to reinstall an existing computer that already has a valid Windows 10 or 11 licence, this counts as having a licence, you do not need to buy another licence for this kind of installation. A licence applies to one computer only and is not transferable.

You should always ensure you get the latest version of the tool. It is always worth spending a couple of minutes to download the tool as the latest version will include updates and fixes so do not use a version you downloaded previously. Once at the site, under Create Windows 11 installation media you will see a link to Download now. If you click the link, it will download automatically, probably to your Downloads folder.

You will need A USB flash drive with at least 8GB of space (or a blank DVD and DVD burner) to continue. The media creation tool will overwrite any data on the flash drive so preferably, the flash drive should be blank.

  • If choosing to download to a USB drive, insert the USB drive you set aside earlier for the Windows 11 media creation tool
  • Click Open file, or Navigate to the folder where the download is located and double click the downloaded file which will be named something like MediaCreationTool.exe
  • If the User Account Control dialogue appears asking for permission to run the file, click Yes
  • On the Applicable notices and licence terms page, read the notes then click Accept to accept the terms
  • On the Select language and edition page, some defaults might be pre-selected based on your current system. If they are not appropriate, if necessary, uncheck the Use the recommended options for this PC checkbox and choose your desired settings
  • Once the settings are as you want, click Next
  • On the Choose which media to use page, USB flash drive should already be selected, if not, select it
  • Click Next

If you wish, you can select ISO file, download it then burn the ISO file to a DVD if the USB on the computer to be installed is malfunctioning.

  • If you chose to create the media on a USB flash drive, you should click on the appropriate USB drive
  • Click Next
  • The installation media will be downloaded then created onto your flash drive
  • If you chose to download an ISO file in the previous step, you must choose a path and filename for the download. Usually, it will default to the downloads folder and the filename will be Windows.iso
  • Windows 11 will download then the media will be created
  • On the Your USB flash drive (or Your ISO file) is ready page, click Finish
