I found an app on ZD-net that runs a messenger service on Windows that seems to do what you want. Its called Popup Message 1.0. When a message is sent from another box, a messagebox appears on the receiving workstation, just as with Windows NT (there is no option to reply to the message).

When you unzip it, all you need is the small application (popupmessage.exe) put somewhere like c:\windows\system (there is no installation needed) and then probably a shortcut to it in c:\windows\start menu\programs\startup to have it running from startup.
Obviously I cant actually vouch for this software, its up to you to try it out and see if its OK but hey, its free.
